Edmonton is growing. From newborns to newcomers, from students starting school to refugees starting a new life, Edmontonians want to feel welcome and supported. So we can all contribute.
“I think we are ‘citymates’ — all of us. When newcomers choose Edmonton, we should support them because Edmonton is our home and their home too. So we’re in the same home.”
How will spaces for creativity and innovation make our city a better place to live? According to Alex Prior, Chief Conductor of the ESO, and Annemarie Petrov, CEO of the Winspear Centre, music, art and theatre help bring us together as a society.
“I think Edmonton’s going to be an incredible hotbed of creativity, a creative hub, a cultural hub...a place where creativity is celebrated and encouraged and given the opportunity, could become something really quite extraordinary.”

The MacKinnon Ravine is an example of the PRESERVE value in action. Listen to Dr. Stunden Bower, Associate Professor for the University of Alberta’s History and Classics Department, discuss the ravine’s history.

Throughout The City Plan engagement sessions, Edmontonians told us they want their future city to provide opportunities for all residents to succeed, no matter who they are or where they come from.
“Having an understanding of the different walks of life, creating a safe environment, a safe city to live in, a city that is understanding, that has supports to be able to accommodate the different types of people that are coming here is so important.”
Is about developing new physical and economic opportunities for ideas, talent and investment to come together.
By creating a collaborative environment where businesses, academic institutions, the arts, and technology spark synergies and drive competitiveness ahead, Edmonton is attractive by design.
Is about working with what we have today and continuously adapting and re-imagining our built environment to meet the needs of the future.
Reshaping the city to better serve another million residents will require that we preserve our heritage assets while deliberately making more room to grow.
Is about creating a city that is dedicated to preserving and protecting the environment through good design and conscious development decisions.
By designing for people, a greener city is a place where everyone has access to natural spaces and can enjoy the benefits of living a healthier and better connected outdoor life.
Is city-making that supports human-centred design where people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can not only survive, but thrive.
By focusing on building a city that emphasizes compassion and inclusivity, the City of Edmonton and Edmonton residents alike are intentional in their efforts to reduce poverty, provide attainable and affordable housing and eliminate homelessness.
Is about building connections to welcome new residents and developing housing, recreation and employment centres that are within reach.
They are linked by a range of efficient mobility options and walkable features. Diverse design and development opportunities are provided to meet the needs of residents through all life’s phases.
